HULL RUFC vs BROMSGROVE

Despite dominating the scrummage and matching the Bromsgrove forward effort for most of the game Hull were undone by a series of basic errors in kicking and handling that presented Bromsgrove with five tries .At this level you cannot do that and hope to succeed.

Hull started slowly and a dropped ball after only a couple of minutes nearly saw Bromsgrove score and they pressurized Hull's line for the first few minutes but when they failed to convert a penalty chance Hull swept downfield and normal service seemed to have been resumed when slick handling from the set piece saw full back Kirk stroll in for a try. The wide  angle proving to much for James Cameron to add the points. This was to be the high point of Hull's afternoon.

Hull had already been kicking the ball straight at the opposition and after 12 minutes the exercise was repeated and this time Bromsgrove took full advantage as they moved the ball  quickly and Bromsgrove's centre Wilson brushed off a tackle and plunged over the line.  Copson missed the conversion.

It wasn't long before Bromsgrove were back on the attack and despite their full back Curgenven missing two kickable penalties Hull's propensity for kicking to their opponents produced another chance for the home side who needed only two passes from 40 yards out to put their winger Oliver over in the corner. The conversion having been missed Hull had periods of ball retention and with the score at only 10-5 it was possible for them to retrieve the situation. This looked less likely when first a missed tackle saw Bromsgrove's centre Bache score in the corner and then after another good passing movement by the home side Hull's stretched defence could only watch as Warren dived on a loose ball over Hull's line. Both conversions having been missed, and Cameron having kicked a penalty for Hull in between Bromsgrove's last two tries, Hull were not without hope as the halftime whistle blew.

The respite was short lived as the second half was only minute old when Hull had a simple clearance kick charged down 10 yards out and Burrows got the touchdown for the home side. Despite the fact that  Curgenven yet again missed the conversion Hull were left with a mountain to climb. With Dorrington on for the injured Kirk and despite Hull's backs having to be completely reorganized Hull then had a good spell of pressure and several promising attacks through the forwards  were spoiled by handling errors. The Hull forwards, led by the tireless Chris Murphy, were well on top in the scrummage and Bromsgrove used all their forward substitutes to try and make life a little easier for themselves in the set pieces.

Just when it seemed that Hull's pressure must pay off a Bromsgrove clearance kick was fumbled by Hull on the half way line and a grateful home side picked up and one pass saw winger Oliver race under the post and as Copson converted the game was now lost to Hull. Hull still had enough spirit to drive the home side back and forward power near the line gave Hull scrum half the chance to battle his way over from five yards out for a good try but the as the final whistle approached and Hull making forward substitutions Bromsgrove secured possession a few yards from Hull's line and home side centre Lloyd-Jones sprinted past a host of tired would be tacklers to score under the posts and Copson added an easy conversion gave Bromsgrove a convincing victory margin .
