Hull RUFC vs CALDY

HEAD coach John Widowson believes Hull RUFC's performance in their 19-14 defeat at Caldy shows they have what it takes to compete with National League Two's top teams.

Hull piled on the pressure in the last 10 minutes, but could not find a winning try.

He said: "That was the best rugby we have played this season.

"A draw would have been a fair result.

"Both sides made errors but our pressure in the last 10 minutes should have enabled us to win, but we have demonstrated we have the passion and intensity to be a side in the higher reaches of this division."

Caldy took the lead on three minutes when Parker was on hand to dive over near the posts, giving Vasey an easy conversion.

On 13 minutes Caldy were caught offside at a ruck in their own half and Hull's Lound kicked the penalty goal.

Hull were camped in the Caldy half and, after missing a relatively easy penalty, Lound made no mistake on 38 minutes to put Hull only a point behind.

As the half drew to a close a Caldy breakaway from their own half saw Dickinson go over for a fine try that Vasey converted to give Caldy a 14-6 lead.

The second half saw Lound kick a fine penalty goal from near the halfway line and another fine break by Hull Cook saw his pass to Robinson result in a great try as the winger plunged over in the corner.

Lound's excellent conversion attempt bounced back off a post. With the scores tied at 14-14 and just when it seemed only a matter of time before Hull scored again, a handling error gave Caldy the ball on the half-way line and Caldy broke through Dickinson.

Eventually the ball came to Caldy's Smith who touched down eight yards in from the touchline but Vasey's conversion attempt sailed wide.

Hull built up pressure in the last 10 minutes, but Caldy held on, leaving the visitors just one score away from taking the points.
