Coach John Widdowson says Hull's 35-7 defeat to Loughborough Students is a reality check for his side.
The team sit second-bottom of National League 2 North after winning just one game so far this season. Coach John Widdowson said, "We got the first win and some momentum last week. I don't think we lost momentum but it's a reality check of where we need to be if we are going to compete at the very top end of the table."
Hull went behind on ten minutes when Students' danger-man, centre Edmund Rolston, rounded off a sweeping cross-field move to score out wide, but Chris Surman failed to add the conversion attempt.
Two penalties from Surman in the 18th and 22nd minutes extended the home side's lead and they added to Hull's problems when Callum Wilson nipped in for an unconverted try on 29 minutes.
Whenever Hull looked as if they might break the home defence they were either let down by errors or fell foul of the referee.
Turning round 16-0 down, Hull hoped for a better second period, but instead found Rolston popping up for his second try with only a minute gone. Surman added the conversion and it was 23-0.
Hull's hopes were raised briefly when good approach work started by Phil Murphy ended with winger Alex Piercy going in for a try on 44 minutes, Lound adding the conversion.
The Students hit back with tries in the 67th and 78th minutes from Craig Holland and Chris Kinloch, the latter being converted by Stuart Hall.
There were positives for Hull. For long periods, despite the scoreline, the defence looked sound.
Oliver Cook was chosen by Loughborough as the Hull man of the match for a spirited display and the forwards in general, led as ever by Chris Murphy, may have just had the edge, while the backs often looked dangerous but had too little ball to shine.
