Hull RUFC vs LUCTONIANS

HULL RUFC's Dan Cook believes his side can gain plenty of confidence from their 15-14 victory over Luctonians.

It was only their second National League Two win of the season, and arguably they should have eased to a more comfortable triumph.

Nevertheless, Cook was delighted to get the points on the board.

He said: "It's a great relief to get a win like this.

"We played well for long periods and looked the better side but we could have lost it in the last minute.

"The victory will breed confidence and we should be winning games like this more easily."

It certainly was not an easy win, although with quarter of an hour to go Hull looked in command.

In the first half it took 20 minutes for Luctonians to ease into a six-point lead, thanks to their winger, John Morris' boot.

Possession had been evenly split between the teams but handling errors and penalties thwarted Hull's attacking efforts. Hull's Ollie Cook was making his presence felt with surging runs from the base of the scrum and it was after 23 minutes that one such foray brought Hull a penalty under the posts which Greg Lound easily converted.

With Chris Murphy leading the forward charge, and every one of Hull's pack making a significant contribution, Hull were starting to rattle the visitors.

After 32 minutes, a move involving Matt White, Chris Murphy and Will Robinson saw the winger race in at the corner for a try which Lound was unable to convert.

Having led at half-time, Hull were soon back on the attack.

After 10 minutes a fine, driving maul from a line-out saw Phil Murphy touch down and Lound landed a fine conversion to put Hull in control at 15-6.

Despite conceding a host of penalties, Hull seemed to have weathered the Luctonians' assaults on their line until a frantic last 10 minutes saw Hull nearly slip to defeat.

On 73 minutes Luctonians' Morris kicked a penalty to make the score 15-9.

Moments later, Robinson brought off a try-saving tackle as the visitors swept forward, but even he could not prevent a driving maul giving Luctonians a try on 75 minutes that brought them to within a point.

But Morris missed the relatively easy conversion as well as a long-range penalty as Hull held on.
